One of the greatest symbols of Kerala's ecoconscious
architecture is the ancient homestead
- the Tharavadu house. Its design is based on the
principle of being in harmony with Nature, be it in
the play of light and air inside or in the flowery,
fruit laden garden outside.
Sadly, with the march of time, these magnificent
dwellings began to face the danger of being
stripped and sold for timber. |

Surya Samudra Kovalam is where that glorious era of
architecture has been saved from extinction.
Each of our residences is a carefully restored
traditional home. The terracotta roofs, tiled floors,
wooden pillars, and ornate doors evoke a heady
sense of romance with the past. Every article of
furniture, painting, and decoration is a handpicked
page out of history. |
|
Of course, to keep in tune with the times, each
residence comes complete with all modern
amenities.
Some of these residences stand graciously on a
cliff offering magnificent views of the sea. Others
sit snugly in palm groves that dot the hillside. |
